Mumbai to Nashik by Road: The Complete Guide
Stops, tolls, food and the best time to leave for an effortless drive.
Aarav from Indimiles
Mumbai-based road trip obsessive. I have done this drive in summer, monsoon, and peak wedding season.
Mumbai to Nashik is my default reset button. When the city starts feeling too loud, I leave before sunrise, cross Thane while the shops are still shuttered, climb Kasara Ghat with a cutting chai in hand, and reach Nashik in time for misal, temples, vineyards, and a slower kind of weekend.
Mumbai to Nashik road trip quick answer
| Best route | Eastern Express Highway to NH-160 via Thane, Bhiwandi, Kasara, Igatpuri, Ghoti |
|---|---|
| Distance | About 165 km from South/Central Mumbai, shorter from Thane |
| Driving time | 3.5 to 5 hours depending on Thane traffic and ghat speed |
| Best departure | 5:15 AM to 6:00 AM on Saturday; before 2:00 PM on Sunday return |
| Best season | October to February for cool weather; July to September for green ghats |
| Ideal trip length | 2 days for vineyards and temples; 3 days if you add Anjneri or Saptashrungi |
My favorite way to do the drive
I like leaving Mumbai at 5:30 AM, even if it hurts for the first ten minutes. By the time I cross Mulund toll, the sky is turning blue and the highway feels almost private. If you leave after 7:30 AM, Bhiwandi and Thane can easily steal an hour from your weekend.
- Mumbai to Thane: keep moving, do not stop unless you need fuel.
- Thane to Bhiwandi: the most unpredictable section; stay patient around trucks.
- Bhiwandi to Padgha: good breakfast and fuel options start appearing.
- Padgha to Kasara: the landscape opens up and the mood changes.
- Kasara Ghat to Igatpuri: the best-looking part of the drive, especially in monsoon.
- Igatpuri to Nashik: easy, fast, and scenic on clear winter mornings.
Where I stop for food and clean washrooms
For families, I would choose a larger highway restaurant around Padgha or Igatpuri because parking and washrooms are easier. If I am with friends, I prefer smaller misal and vada pav stops near Ghoti, where the food is sharper, cheaper, and more local.
- Padgha: safest zone for a clean breakfast stop with kids.
- Kasara: good for chai, kanda bhaji, and a quick stretch before the climb.
- Igatpuri: good backup stop if traffic delayed your breakfast.
- Ghoti: stop here if you want proper Nashik-style misal before entering the city.
What to do when you reach Nashik
If this is your first Nashik trip, do not try to do everything. Pick one spiritual anchor, one food trail, and one slow vineyard evening. That combination is what makes Nashik feel different from a normal highway weekend.
- Trimbakeshwar Temple: go early, dress modestly, and keep extra time for queues.
- Sula or Soma Vineyards: go around 4:00 PM for softer light and a calmer tasting experience.
- Pandavleni Caves: best at sunrise or just after breakfast; the steps are exposed later.
- Godavari ghats: walk around Ramkund in the evening if you want to feel old Nashik.
- Gangapur Road cafes: good dinner zone if you want something lighter after a spicy lunch.

| Food | INR 1,500 to INR 4,000 |
| Vineyard tasting | INR 800 to INR 2,500 |

FAQs
Is Mumbai to Nashik good for a first road trip?+
Yes. It is short enough for beginners, has reliable food stops, good roads, strong phone network, and plenty to do after arrival.
Can I do Mumbai to Nashik as a one-day trip?+
You can, but I would only do it for one focused plan like Trimbakeshwar plus lunch, or one vineyard day. For temples, food, and vineyards, stay one night.
Is the route safe in monsoon?+
The main NH-160 route is usually safe, but drive slower in Kasara Ghat, avoid night driving in heavy rain, and check live traffic for landslides or breakdowns.
Where should I stay in Nashik for the first time?+
Gangapur Road is convenient for vineyards and restaurants. Stay near Trimbak Road only if the temple is your main reason for visiting.
