A Spiritual Tour of Varanasi

Ghats at dawn, aartis at dusk, and the lanes that hold the city's soul.

D

Dev from Indimiles

I stayed near Assi Ghat and learned quickly that Varanasi rewards patience, not speed.

Varanasi is the only city where I stopped trying to optimize my itinerary. The best moments came between plans: a boatman telling stories at sunrise, a priest tying a thread on my wrist, the smell of ghee lamps at dusk, and the strange quiet that appears even when the ghats are full.

Varanasi first-time guide quick answer

Ideal duration3 days and 2 or 3 nights
Best baseAssi Ghat for calmer stays; Dashashwamedh/Darbhanga for old-city intensity
Best seasonOctober to March
Must-do experienceSunrise boat ride on the Ganga
Respect ruleNever photograph cremation rituals at Manikarnika or Harishchandra Ghat

How I would spend 3 days in Varanasi

Day 1: Walk the ghats and watch the evening aarti

Do not arrive and run straight into a packed checklist. Check in, eat something simple, and walk from Assi Ghat toward Dashashwamedh. This walk teaches you the city better than any guidebook because every ghat has a different rhythm.

For the evening Ganga Aarti, I prefer watching from a boat once and from the steps once. From the boat, you see the full choreography. From the steps, you feel the crowd, bells, smoke, and closeness.

Day 2: Sunrise boat, Kashi Vishwanath, and Sarnath

Book the sunrise boat the night before through your hotel or a trusted boatman. Leave before dawn. Varanasi at sunrise is softer than Varanasi at noon, and that is when the city made sense to me.

After breakfast, go to Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Carry ID, keep your phone and bag in the cloakroom, and dress modestly. Later, take a cab or auto to Sarnath, where Buddha gave his first sermon. It balances the intensity of the old city.

Day 3: Food, lanes, and one last river evening

Use your final day for the lanes: kachori sabzi, tamatar chaat, lassi, silk shops, tiny shrines, and one last sunset by the river. Varanasi is not only spiritual through temples; it is spiritual through repetition.

Things I wish I knew before my first visit

  • The old city lanes are confusing. Save your hotel location offline.
  • Wear slip-on shoes because temples and ghats often require removing footwear.
  • Book a ghat-facing stay only if you are okay with stairs and no direct car access.
  • Do not engage with aggressive donation requests near cremation ghats.
  • Keep mornings for sacred places and afternoons for food/rest. Noon can be chaotic.

Where to stay

Best Varanasi stay areas

Assi GhatCalmer, student-friendly, good for first-timers and solo travelers
Darbhanga GhatBeautiful river views, heritage stays, close to the old city
Dashashwamedh GhatMost central, most crowded, best if you want everything nearby
CantonmentModern hotels and easier car access, but far from the ghat atmosphere

FAQs

How many days are enough for Varanasi?+

Three days are enough for the ghats, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Sarnath, food lanes, and one slow evening. Two days works, but it feels rushed.

Is Varanasi safe for solo travelers?+

Yes, but stay near active ghats, avoid isolated lanes late at night, use known transport, and be firm with touts.

What is the best time for a boat ride in Varanasi?+

Sunrise is best for atmosphere and photography. Evening boat rides are good for watching the Ganga Aarti from the river.

Can I visit cremation ghats?+

You can walk past respectfully, but do not photograph, stare, or treat them like tourist attractions. Keep distance and dignity.
