About Bada Bagh

Six kilometres north of town, Bada Bagh is a terraced garden of chhatris — domed cenotaphs marking the cremation sites of Jaisalmer's rulers, from the 16th century to the 20th. The last is unfinished; the dynasty ended before it could be completed. Wind turbines now line the ridge behind, which purists dislike and photographers rather like. At sunset the sandstone goes deep amber and there are far fewer people here than at the fort.

Insider tips

  • The best sunset near Jaisalmer with a fraction of the fort's crowd
  • Almost no shade or facilities — carry water
  • Ten minutes by auto from town; agree a return fare or you'll wait
