Northeast India for First-Timers
Permits, routes, weather windows and what not to miss across the seven sisters.
Mira from Indimiles
Six Northeast trips later, I still think first-timers should slow down and pick fewer places.
Northeast India is not one destination. It is many landscapes, languages, foods, road conditions, permits, festivals, and moods packed into a corner of the country that most travelers still underestimate. The best advice I can give a first-timer is simple: do less, feel more.
Northeast India first-timer quick answer
| Best first trip | Assam plus Meghalaya in 7 to 10 days |
|---|---|
| Best airport hub | Guwahati for Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal routes |
| Best season | October to April for most routes |
| Permit note | Arunachal, Nagaland, and Mizoram require Inner Line Permit for Indian citizens |
| Travel style | Slow road trips, nature, food, culture, festivals, and homestays |
Do not try to cover all seven states
This is the biggest first-timer mistake. Distances are long, roads can be slow, and every state deserves time. If you have one week, choose Assam plus Meghalaya. If you have ten days, add Kaziranga or a slower Sohra/Dawki section.
Best beginner routes
Route 1: Assam + Meghalaya, 7 to 10 days
Fly into Guwahati, visit Kamakhya Temple, take a Brahmaputra sunset cruise, spend two days in Kaziranga if wildlife matters to you, then continue to Shillong, Sohra, Mawlynnong, and Dawki. This is the easiest and most rewarding first Northeast route.
Route 2: Arunachal Tawang circuit, 8 to 10 days
This is for mountain lovers. The route is slower and higher: Guwahati or Tezpur to Dirang, Sela Pass, Tawang Monastery, and high-altitude lakes. Build acclimatization time into the plan.
Route 3: Nagaland during Hornbill Festival
If your dates match early December, Hornbill Festival near Kohima is a powerful cultural introduction. Book stays early and expect higher prices.
Permits made simple

Food I would not miss
- Assam: thali, pitha, fish tenga, tea garden snacks.
- Meghalaya: jadoh, smoked pork, dohneiiong, local black sesame flavors.
- Nagaland: smoked pork, bamboo shoot, axone, and serious chilli heat.
- Arunachal: thukpa, momos, butter tea, and simple mountain meals.
