What to Pack for a Spiti Valley Trip
Altitude meds, layered clothing, ATMs that don't exist — everything to plan for.
Dev from Indimiles
I learned Spiti packing the hard way: one frozen morning, one useless jacket, and one closed ATM.
Spiti does not forgive casual packing. It looks empty and cinematic in photos, but on the ground it is cold, dry, high, remote, and practical in a way that forces you to respect the mountains. Pack right and the trip feels magical. Pack wrong and every morning becomes a negotiation.
Spiti packing quick answer
| Best travel months | June to September by road; winter trips need specialist planning |
|---|---|
| Main challenge | Altitude, cold wind, dry air, limited ATMs, and long road days |
| Clothing rule | Layering beats one heavy jacket |
| Cash rule | Carry enough cash before entering Spiti |
| Medical rule | Speak to a doctor about altitude medication before the trip |
Clothes I would pack
- Thermal base layer for nights in Kaza, Tabo, Chandratal, and higher villages.
- Fleece or light down jacket for insulation.
- Windproof outer shell. Spiti wind cuts through normal hoodies.
- Comfortable trekking pants or quick-dry pants.
- Wool socks, gloves, beanie, and a neck warmer.
- One decent outfit for cafes or homestays, but do not overpack fashion pieces.
Health and altitude kit
Altitude is the one thing you cannot style your way through. Move slowly, drink water, avoid alcohol at the start, and do not rush from plains to high villages without acclimatization.
- Personal medicines and prescriptions.
- ORS packets and basic stomach medicine.
- Sunscreen SPF 50 and lip balm with SPF.
- Moisturizer and saline nasal spray for dry air.
- Motion sickness medicine if mountain roads affect you.
- Doctor-approved altitude medicine if recommended for you.
Tech, documents, and money
- Offline Google Maps for Himachal and Spiti.
- Power bank; electricity can be patchy in remote stays.
- Printed and digital ID copies.
- Cash in smaller notes. ATMs in remote areas may fail or run dry.
- BSNL/Jio/Airtel SIM if possible, but expect no network often.
- A small torch or headlamp for homestays and late walks.

FAQs
Do I need a heavy jacket for Spiti in summer?+
You need warm layers even in summer. A thermal, fleece or down jacket, and windproof shell work better than one bulky jacket.
Can beginners visit Spiti?+
Yes, but choose a slower route, avoid overpacked days, and take altitude seriously. First-timers should not rush directly to high villages.
Is there mobile network in Spiti?+
Network is unreliable outside major stops. Download offline maps, keep hotel numbers saved, and tell family that you may be unreachable.
How much cash should I carry for Spiti?+
Carry enough for fuel, food, homestays, permits, and emergencies for several days. ATMs can be unavailable or empty.
