The Konkan Railway Window-Seat Guide
Which side to sit, when to book, and the bridges and beaches you'll see.
Aarav from Indimiles
Train-window loyalist. I think the Konkan line is one of India's best slow travel experiences.
The Konkan Railway is not just a way to reach Goa. It is a moving film: red soil, coconut trees, tunnels, rivers, viaducts, sudden sea flashes, and stations that look like they belong to another pace of life. If you love window seats, this is one journey to plan properly.
Konkan Railway quick answer
| Best scenic route | Mumbai to Goa/Mangalore via Konkan Railway |
|---|---|
| Best season | August to October for green views; winter for clearer skies |
| Best train type | Day train if views matter more than sleep |
| Booking site | IRCTC or authorized rail booking platforms |
| Window rule | Choose a daytime train and prioritize window-side seats or lower berths |
Which train should you choose?
If scenery is the reason for the trip, choose a daytime train. Overnight trains are practical, but you will sleep through the best part. I would pick a morning departure from Mumbai if I wanted the full Konkan mood.
- Mandovi Express: slower, scenic, and good for a full-day window-seat journey.
- Tejas Express: faster and comfortable, but less slow-travel romance.
- Konkan Kanya Express: useful overnight option when views are not the priority.
- Matsyagandha or similar long-distance trains: good if traveling beyond Goa toward coastal Karnataka.
What you will see from the window
Konkan view zones
| Mumbai to Roha | Urban edges slowly turning into green countryside |
|---|---|
| Chiplun/Ratnagiri belt | Rivers, bridges, mango country, and red earth |
| Kankavli/Sawantwadi belt | Coconut groves, wet fields, monsoon waterfalls |
| Goa approach | Backwaters, churches, palms, and softer coastal light |
Food, seats, and small comforts
I carry my own breakfast, water, wet wipes, and a light shawl. Train food is fine on many routes, but the best part is still station food and hot chai. Keep cash handy for vendors.
