Udaipur in 48 Hours
A weekend itinerary through palaces, lakes and rooftop dinners.
Mira from Indimiles
I went to Udaipur for a weekend and spent most of it chasing lake light.
Udaipur is built for people who like walking slowly into beautiful frames. A blue lake at the end of a lane, a palace wall glowing at sunset, a rooftop where dinner takes twice as long because everyone keeps taking photos. If you only have 48 hours, this is how I would spend them.
Udaipur in 48 hours quick answer
| Best base | Old City around Lal Ghat, Hanuman Ghat, or Gangaur Ghat |
|---|---|
| Must-do | City Palace, Lake Pichola boat ride, Bagore ki Haveli, sunset dinner |
| Best season | September to March |
| Ideal budget | INR 8,000 to INR 25,000 for two days depending on stay |
| Best travel style | Couples, families, photographers, slow weekend travelers |
Day 1 evening: arrive and do only one thing
After check-in, do not overplan. Walk to the lake, find your first rooftop, and let the city introduce itself. If timings work, see the Dharohar folk dance at Bagore ki Haveli. It is touristy, yes, but it is also genuinely enjoyable.
Day 2: palaces, lanes, and Lake Pichola
Morning: City Palace
Go early. The City Palace is huge and crowded later in the day. I recommend the audio guide if you like context; otherwise the rooms can blur into one long beautiful corridor.
Lunch: old-city cafe or thali
Keep lunch near the palace area so you do not lose time. Millets of Mewar, local thali spots, or a lake-view cafe all work depending on your mood.
Evening: Lake Pichola boat ride
This is the Udaipur moment. Take the boat close to sunset if you can. The palace turns warm, the water catches the sky, and even if you have seen hundreds of photos, it still feels special in person.
Day 3 morning: one viewpoint before leaving
If you have an early afternoon departure, go to Sajjangarh/Monsoon Palace in the morning or take a relaxed walk around Fateh Sagar. Do not squeeze Kumbhalgarh into a 48-hour trip unless you are okay sacrificing Udaipur's slower rhythm.
Where to stay for the first time
Udaipur stay areas
| Old City/Lal Ghat | Best for first-time sightseeing and lake-view hotels |
|---|---|
| Hanuman Ghat | Quieter, charming, good guesthouses and cafes |
| Fateh Sagar | More open and residential, good if you want less old-city congestion |
| Outside city resorts | Beautiful but less convenient for a short first visit |
