Alleppey Travel Guide

Alleppey sits at the heart of Kerala's backwater network, and the converted rice barges known as kettuvallam are how most people see it. A standard cruise runs midday to the following morning: lunch aboard, an afternoon drifting past villages where life happens at the water's edge, sunset moorings, dinner of fresh karimeen, and a still, misted morning. Boats are legally required to moor overnight, so nobody cruises after dark. Smaller shikara canoes reach the narrow canals houseboats physically cannot.

The beach itself is unremarkable by Kerala standards, but the crumbling iron sea-bridge — built in 1862 when Alleppey was a major port — gives it a character no other beach here has. Evenings bring families, kite sellers and carts of chilled tender coconut and kadala. The lighthouse behind is open to visitors and worth the climb for the view along the coast.

Mararikulam is what people imagine when they picture the Kerala coast: coconut palms leaning over a wide, clean beach, wooden fishing boats pulled up on the sand, and almost nobody on it. The village still fishes commercially, so early mornings bring the catch in. A cluster of good beach resorts has grown here without overwhelming it. This is the antidote to a backwater cruise's constant sociability.

Built by Marthanda Varma in the classic Kerala style — gabled roofs, dormer windows, inner courtyards — Krishnapuram is 47 km from Alleppey at Kayamkulam. Its centrepiece is the Gajendra Moksham mural, over 150 square feet and among the largest in Kerala, depicting the elephant Gajendra's liberation. The archaeological museum around it holds bronzes, coins and megalithic remains, and the grounds have a Buddha statue and a lily pond.

The name means 'sands of midnight'. This small uninhabited island sits in the middle of Vembanad Lake and is a designated bird habitat — over ninety local species and around fifty migratory ones, including Siberian arrivals in winter. There is no infrastructure beyond paths, which is precisely the appeal. Access is by shikara or motorboat from Muhamma jetty, roughly 20 minutes each way.
