About Pathiramanal Island

The name means 'sands of midnight'. This small uninhabited island sits in the middle of Vembanad Lake and is a designated bird habitat — over ninety local species and around fifty migratory ones, including Siberian arrivals in winter. There is no infrastructure beyond paths, which is precisely the appeal. Access is by shikara or motorboat from Muhamma jetty, roughly 20 minutes each way.

Insider tips

  • Early morning is when the birds are actually active
  • Carry binoculars — the island rewards them
  • No food, water or toilets on the island; bring what you need
