About Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib)
Harmandir Sahib sits at the centre of a sacred pool, the Amrit Sarovar, reached by a causeway, its upper storeys covered in gold leaf. Four doors face four directions, signifying openness to all people. It is astonishing at any hour, and extraordinary before dawn and after dark when the gold reflects off the water. The langar — the community kitchen — serves free meals to somewhere around 100,000 people every day, run almost entirely by volunteers, and eating there is as much a part of the visit as seeing the shrine.

- Heads must be covered and shoes removed — scarves and shoe deposit are free at the entrance
- Eat in the langar; volunteering in the kitchen for an hour is welcomed and unforgettable
