Darjeeling Travel Guide

At 2,590 m, Tiger Hill is the sunrise viewpoint for the eastern Himalaya. On a clear morning the first light strikes Kanchenjunga (8,586 m) and turns the snow gold before the sun itself appears; Everest, Makalu and Lhotse are visible far to the west on the very best days. The catch is the crowd — hundreds of jeeps leave Darjeeling around 4 AM and the viewing platforms are packed. Book a paid tier seat or accept standing behind a lot of people.

The two-foot narrow-gauge line from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling opened in 1881 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. It climbs through loops and zigzags including the famous Batasia Loop, and steam locomotives still work the popular Darjeeling–Ghum joy ride. The full run from NJP takes around seven hours and is an endurance test as much as a journey; most visitors take the two-hour joy ride instead, which is the right call for most people.

Five kilometres from Darjeeling, the Batasia Loop is an engineering solution to a gradient problem: the toy train spirals through a complete circle to descend gently. At the centre sits a memorial to the Gorkha soldiers who died since Independence, surrounded by a landscaped garden. With Kanchenjunga filling the horizon behind the loop, it is the single most photographed spot on the line — and worth timing to coincide with a train coming through.

Established in 1854 and among the oldest gardens in Darjeeling, Happy Valley sits about three kilometres from Chowrasta and is the most accessible estate for visitors. During plucking season (roughly March to November) you can walk the terraces, watch the withering, rolling and drying floors in the factory, and taste first- and second-flush Darjeeling at source. Outside season the factory is quiet and the walk is still lovely.

At 2,134 m this is India's largest high-altitude zoo, and its conservation record is genuine — internationally recognised breeding programmes for snow leopards, red pandas and Himalayan wolves. It shares its site with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, founded after Tenzing Norgay's 1953 Everest ascent, whose museum covers the history of Himalayan climbing. One ticket covers both, and together they make a strong half-day.
