Mysuru Travel Guide

The current Amba Vilas Palace was completed in 1912 after fire destroyed its predecessor, designed by the British architect Henry Irwin in an Indo-Saracenic style that blends Hindu, Mughal, Rajput and Gothic elements. Inside are the Durbar Hall, the stained-glass Kalyana Mantapa with its peacock-motif ceiling, and rosewood doors inlaid with ivory. It is the second-most visited monument in India after the Taj Mahal. On Sunday evenings and public holidays, around 100,000 bulbs illuminate the entire exterior for an hour — plan your trip around it.

Chamundeshwari Temple sits at 1,062 m atop Chamundi Hill, dedicated to the goddess who slew the demon Mahishasura — from whom Mysuru takes its name. The 12th-century shrine has a seven-storey gopuram, and a huge statue of Mahishasura stands nearby. The traditional approach is the roughly 1,000-step climb, passing a monolithic Nandi bull carved in 1659 from a single block of black granite at step 700 or so. A road runs to the top for those who would rather not.

Laid out in the 1920s and 30s below the Krishna Raja Sagara dam, Brindavan is a symmetrical terraced garden in the Mughal manner — parterres, topiary, fountains and lit water channels. The draw is the evening musical fountain, when the water is choreographed to music and coloured light. It is a nostalgic, slightly faded attraction rather than a manicured modern one, and it is best treated in that spirit. Roughly 21 km from Mysuru.

Built between 1933 and 1941 and inspired by Cologne Cathedral, St. Philomena's is one of the largest churches in Asia. The twin spires reach 175 feet, the plan is a cross, and the stained glass depicts the life of Christ. Beneath the main altar is a catacomb holding a relic of St. Philomena. Its scale is genuinely surprising in the middle of Mysuru, and the interior is cool, high and quiet.

Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens opened in 1892 and is consistently rated among the best-managed zoos in India — spacious enclosures, mature trees and a serious conservation and breeding record, particularly with elephants and big cats. It houses around 150 species across 157 acres. It is a straightforward, well-executed family half-day, and unusually pleasant to walk around because of the tree cover.
