About St. Philomena's Cathedral

Built between 1933 and 1941 and inspired by Cologne Cathedral, St. Philomena's is one of the largest churches in Asia. The twin spires reach 175 feet, the plan is a cross, and the stained glass depicts the life of Christ. Beneath the main altar is a catacomb holding a relic of St. Philomena. Its scale is genuinely surprising in the middle of Mysuru, and the interior is cool, high and quiet.

Insider tips

  • Morning sun through the eastern stained glass is the shot
  • The catacomb below the altar is open and often missed
  • Modest dress is expected; it is an active church
