About Cherai Beach

Cherai is where Kochi goes to swim. The shallow, gently shelving water makes it one of the safer beaches on this coast, and dolphins are sighted often enough to be worth watching for. What makes it unusual is the geography: a narrow strip with open sea on one side and backwater canals a few hundred metres away on the other, so you can move between the two in minutes. Reached from Fort Kochi via the Vypin ferry.

Insider tips

  • The ferry crossing from Fort Kochi to Vypin is part of the fun — and cheap
  • Shallower and safer for swimming than most Kerala beaches, but still respect the flags
  • Sunday afternoons are extremely busy with local families
