About Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace)
The Portuguese built this in 1555 as a gift to the Raja of Kochi; the Dutch renovated it in 1663, which is how it acquired the misleading name. The exterior is plain Kerala style. The interior is not — the bedchamber and coronation hall carry murals of the Ramayana and Puranic scenes in vivid vegetable dyes, dense and remarkably preserved. The palanquins, coronation robes and royal portraits fill out the rest.
