About Fort Kochi & Chinese Fishing Nets
The cheena vala — huge cantilevered nets worked by teams of four to six men using counterweights — have lined this shoreline since somewhere between the 14th and 17th centuries, brought by Chinese traders. They still operate, though catches have fallen and much of the income now comes from visitors. The wider Fort Kochi district is the real attraction: Portuguese, Dutch and British buildings on the same street, cafés in old warehouses, and a genuinely walkable seafront.
