About Assam State Museum

Founded in 1940 near Dighalipukhuri, the Assam State Museum is the most efficient way to understand the region before travelling further into the northeast. Galleries cover stone and copper-plate inscriptions, medieval sculpture, arms, textiles and — the strongest section — reconstructed village interiors representing Assam's many tribal communities. For visitors heading on to Kaziranga or Meghalaya, an hour here provides context nothing else in Guwahati does.

Insider tips

  • Closed Mondays
  • The tribal culture galleries on the upper floor are the reason to come
  • Do this before heading to Kaziranga or Meghalaya, not after
