About Basistha Ashram
On Guwahati's southern edge where the city gives way to the Meghalaya foothills, Basistha Ashram sits at the confluence of three streams — Sandhya, Lalita and Kanta. Tradition holds that the sage Vasistha established his hermitage here; the present Shiva temple was built in 1764 by the Ahom king Rajeswar Singha. The surrounding Garbhanga reserve forest makes it far greener and quieter than anywhere else within the city limits, and the streams are a popular spot to sit.
