About Umananda Island
Umananda sits in the middle of the Brahmaputra, reached by a short ferry from Kachari Ghat — often described as the smallest inhabited river island anywhere. The Shiva temple on it was built in 1694 by the Ahom king Gadadhar Singha. The island is also home to a small population of golden langurs, one of India's most endangered primates, which are usually visible in the trees. The ferry crossing itself, out into the width of the Brahmaputra, is half the pleasure.
